Nether ↔ Overworld coordinates

One block travelled in the Nether is worth eight in the Overworld, and height doesn't change. That makes the Nether the most efficient transport network in the game, as long as the portals are in the right places.

  • The game looks for an existing portal within 128 blocks of the arrival point. Keep your Overworld portals at least 2048 blocks apart so they don't link to the same Nether portal.

Building a network that holds

  1. Place the Overworld portal first and note its coordinates with F3.
  2. Divide X and Z by 8, keep the same Y, and dig to that point in the Nether.
  3. Build a portal there rather than walking through: an automatically generated portal rarely lands where you want it.
  4. Keep at least 2048 blocks between two Overworld portals, or they end up linking to the same Nether portal.
