Minecraft server game modes: survival, factions, skyblock and the rest

16 October 2026 · 4 min read

There are thousands of Minecraft servers, but only about twenty game modes. Choosing the mode before the server saves you from hopping from lobby to lobby without knowing what you're after. Here's what each name covers, from the most peaceful to the most competitive, each time with that mode's servers ranked by player votes.

The table at a glance

Mode The idea Who it's for
Survival the base game, with others, plus land protection everyone
Semi-RP survival with towns, jobs and an economy those who like building together
Factions bases to defend, raids, alliances competitive players, in teams
Skyblock an island in the void to expand patient players, alone or in pairs
Prison mine to rank up those who like seeing their progress
Minigames short matches: BedWars, SkyWars… ten-minute sessions
PvP pure combat, arenas and kits those who like to fight
Anarchy no rules, no resets seasoned players
Modded added mods: Cobblemon, tech… players ready to install a modpack
Creative unlimited blocks, free building builders

Survival and its variants

Survival

The Minecraft everyone knows, shared with others: you gather, build and explore. Servers add land protection, so your base can't be raided, quality-of-life commands like /home or /tpa, and often an economy. It's the best place to start: see the survival servers.

Three variants: vanilla stays as close as possible to the base game, with no added commands (vanilla servers); hardcore gives you one life only (hardcore servers); OneBlock starts you on a single block that regenerates endlessly (OneBlock servers).

Semi-RP, Towny and economy

Semi-RP mixes survival with light role-play: towns, jobs, a player market, events. Towny organises the world into towns and nations, with mayors, taxes and diplomacy. Economy servers focus on trade and jobs. These are the most social modes: you come back for your town and your neighbours. See the semi-RP, Towny and economy servers.

Roleplay

Full roleplay asks you to play a character, with a backstory and writing rules: less mining, more storytelling. See the roleplay servers.

Competitive modes

Factions

Each team, the faction, claims a territory, builds a base there and tries to raid everyone else's, with TNT, alliances and betrayals. Seasons last a few weeks before a reset. A demanding mode: better to join an existing faction than to play alone. See the factions servers.

PvP

Combat first: arenas, kits, duels, leaderboards. Combat settings vary, pre-1.9 or current system: the server's page says which. See the PvP servers.

Anarchy

No rules, no gameplay moderation, no resets: the world bears years of destruction. For experienced players only, and not for the youngest, as chat isn't filtered there. See the anarchy servers.

Progression modes

Skyblock

You start on a small island floating in the void, with a tree and a few blocks. Everything else is crafted: cobblestone generators, farms, challenges to complete. Ideal alone or in pairs, at your own pace. See the skyblock servers.

Prison

You start as a "prisoner", mine to earn money, and buy your way to the next rank, from A to Z, all the way to freedom. Easy to pick up, with very visible progress. See the prison servers.

Short matches

Minigames and BedWars

Matches lasting a few minutes, started from a lobby: BedWars, where each team protects its bed, SkyWars, parkour, deduction games. Perfect when you only have half an hour. See the minigames and BedWars servers.

UHC

Ultra Hardcore: survival without natural health regeneration, in teams, on a shrinking map. Games happen at set times: keep an eye on upcoming events. See the UHC servers.

The others

Modded and Cobblemon

Modded servers add blocks, machines and creatures: you need to install the same modpack as they have. Cobblemon, which adds creatures to catch and train, has become a mode of its own. See the modded and Cobblemon servers.

Creative and freebuild

Unlimited blocks, no monsters: you build. Creative gives everyone a plot; freebuild lets you build wherever you like, often in survival with land protection. See the creative and freebuild servers.

Find your mode

Still unsure? The Find your server quiz starts from what you enjoy, building, fighting, progressing or playing as a team, and suggests three servers. Once you've picked the mode, the guide How to choose a good Minecraft server helps you decide between the ones left.
