A nice address for your server: domain name and SRV record

23 September 2026 · 2 min read

An address is remembered, typed and shared. play.myserver.com inspires confidence; 203.0.113.7:25577 scares people off. A domain name costs a few euros a year and lets you change host without players changing address.

A name without a port thanks to the SRV record

1. Buy the domain

From any registrar (OVHcloud, Gandi, Cloudflare, etc.). A .com or a country domain costs between 5 and 15 € a year. Pick something short, without hyphens, easy to spell out loud.

2. The A record

In the domain's DNS zone, create:

Type Name Value
A play your server's IP, for example 203.0.113.7

If your server listens on 25565, you're done: players type play.myserver.com.

3. The SRV record, when the port isn't 25565

With many hosts, your server has an assigned port (25577, 26010…). Rather than making players type it, an SRV record tells the game where to connect:

Field Value
Type SRV
Name _minecraft._tcp.play
Priority 0
Weight 5
Port 25577
Target mc1.myserver.com (which has its own A record)

The game looks for this SRV first; if it finds it, it connects to the target and port given.

An SRV's target must be a name with an A (or AAAA) record, not a CNAME alias: the standard forbids it and some clients fail. The full diagnosis of the server tester checks it.

With Cloudflare, leave the grey cloud ("DNS only") on the server's A record: the orange proxy only forwards web traffic, not Minecraft.

4. Check

The server tester follows the SRV like the game does: type play.myserver.com without a port, it shows the target and port found, then the server's status. DNS changes can take from a few minutes to a few hours to propagate.

Bedrock players

Bedrock doesn't read SRV records: players enter the address and the port. If you use Geyser, show the Bedrock port clearly on your listing and your Discord.

And on CubeVote?

List the address your players type, without a port if the SRV is in place: it's what shows on your listing and on the "Copy address" buttons.
