Set up LuckPerms: ranks, permissions and inheritance
15 September 2026 · 2 min read
LuckPerms is the go-to permissions manager on Paper, Velocity, Fabric and Forge. Well designed, your ranks fit in a few commands; badly designed, every new plugin turns into a hunt for missing permissions.
The principle: inheritance
Each rank only adds what is its own, and inherits the rest. The vip rank inherits from default; vip+ inherits from vip. Giving /spawn to default gives it to everyone, VIPs included.
Create the ranks
/lp creategroup vip
/lp creategroup vipplus
/lp creategroup helper
/lp creategroup moderator
/lp creategroup admin
/lp group vip parent add default
/lp group vipplus parent add vip
/lp group helper parent add default
/lp group moderator parent add helper
/lp group admin parent add moderator
Give permissions
/lp group default permission set essentials.spawn true
/lp group vip permission set essentials.hat true
/lp group moderator permission set essentials.ban true
To remove an inherited permission from a specific rank, set it to false rather than deleting it from the parent.
Weights and prefixes
When a player has several ranks, the weight decides which one wins, notably for the prefix. Space them out in tens so you can insert more later:
/lp group vip setweight 20
/lp group admin setweight 90
/lp group admin meta setprefix 90 "&8[&cAdmin&8]&r "
The Rank tag generator draws each rank's badge in pixel art and writes the matching setprefix command, gradients included.
The web editor
/lp editor opens an editor in the browser: rank tree, permission search, drag and drop. Changes are applied when you click "Save" and a command is shown to confirm. It's the safest way to review a configuration at a glance.
The traps
- The star
*gives absolutely everything, including every plugin's dangerous commands. Keep it for the owner's account, never for a rank. - Operators (
/op) bypass LuckPerms. Keep the ops list empty and go through ranks for everything. - A network: connect all servers to the same MySQL database in LuckPerms'
config.yml, otherwise each server has its own ranks. - Bedrock players via Floodgate have a prefixed username (a dot by default): they receive their ranks normally, but type their full username in commands.
