Build your server's spawn: the first 30 seconds
24 September 2026 · 2 min read
A player joining your server for the first time decides in half a minute whether to stay. They don't read the rules, they look around. The spawn must answer three questions without them having to ask: where am I, what can I do here, where do I start?
What the spawn must show
- The server's name, clearly visible: it confirms to the player they're in the right place.
- An obvious path to the game. A portal, an NPC, a "Start here" sign: one single action to go and play.
- The rules in five lines, on a sign or a hologram. The short version from the rules generator is made for this.
- Discord and voting, without turning it into a wall of ads.
Everything else (shop, leaderboard, lore) comes after, further from the arrival point.
Size and orientation
- Small. A huge spawn loses newcomers and costs performance. Everything that matters should be visible from the arrival point, or a few steps away.
- Facing what matters. The player appears looking in a specific direction: place them facing the path that leads to the game.
- Readable at night: light it up, otherwise monsters may spawn on the edges.
To set the spawn point: /setworldspawn in vanilla, or /setspawn with the EssentialsX Spawn module, which also sends players to spawn on first login.
Protect the spawn
The spawn-protection setting in server.properties stops non-operator players from building around the spawn point, but that's all it does. WorldGuard goes further, by region:
/rg define spawn
/rg flag spawn pvp deny
/rg flag spawn build deny
/rg flag spawn mob-spawning deny
/rg flag spawn greeting &aWelcome to the server!
(The first command uses the selection made with the WorldEdit axe.) With WorldGuard, set spawn-protection=0: the two protections together muddle your team's permissions. The server.properties generator explains this setting.
NPCs, holograms and menus
- NPCs (Citizens, FancyNpcs) that send to a game mode in one click: clearer than a list of commands.
- Holograms (DecentHolograms) for titles and short rules. The gradient text tool gives colourful titles to paste in.
- A welcome message on first login, with a clickable link to the Discord: the /tellraw generator produces the command.
Keep count of entities: every NPC, hologram or item frame is an entity the server processes constantly. A hundred at spawn is felt in performance.
Keep a smooth spawn
It's the busiest place on the server: everyone passes through it.
- No redstone running in a loop, no farms, no dozens of armour stands.
- Simple blocks rather than thousands of decorative heads, heavy to render on low-end setups.
- Spawn chunks: since 1.20.5, the
spawnChunkRadiusgame rule sets how many chunks stay permanently loaded around the spawn point. Lower it if your spawn doesn't need to be always loaded.
A Spark profile taken during a busy hour will tell you whether the spawn is expensive.
Test with a real newcomer
Ask someone who has never seen the server to join while you watch, without telling them anything. Note where they hesitate, what they don't see, what they ask in chat. Every question asked is a missing sign. It's also the right time to reread the guide Launch your server successfully.
